Actions Planned, Actions Taken

Communications Workers Local 6171 had the largest contingent at the Jobs with Justice planning meeting on July 9, 2009. They are planning a major health care rally for July 18:

The group looked at the latest developments in Congress on health care. Plans were made to try to get more people involved in the fight for health care reform. Some of the activists had already planned to go to Senator Hutchinson's office on the next day.

Dr David Brockman gave us a report on the national conference of the Interfaith Worker Justice group. He said they are establishing worker centers like the one in Austin which just had a positive effect on the issue of worker safety for Texas construction workers.

Jorge Del Cid and Margarita Alvarez reported on their efforts to make sure that Americans stand up for democracy in Central America.

Hobie Hukill talked about the teachers' union's upcoming efforts in school board elections

Further plans were made to push for the Employee Free Choice Act, especially because it may come up for a vote in Congress this month. Everyone was asked to build attendance at the Progressive Center of Texas forum 6:30-8:30 PM Tuesday July 21 at 1409 S Lamar in Dallas. We particularly want to get workers who can give testimony about trying to organize under the present sorry labor law.
