Labor and Civil Rights Songfest Coming Up

North Texas Jobs with Justice has invited all the AFL-CIO constituency groups to a songfest at 2 PM on Sunday, February 26, at 1408 N Washington in East Dallas. So far, leaders of the A Phillip Randolph Institute, the Coalition for Labor Union Women, Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, Texas Alliance for Retired Americans, and the Coalition for Black Trade Unionists have indicated their interest. Professional performers Kenny Winfree of Arlington and J.D. Kenny Winfree singsThompson of Norman, Oklahoma, are committed to perform. Winfree was the central act in our previous Labor Songfest, and Thompson organized music for the Oklahoma Laborfest that gained so much attention last Fall. Thompson is also quite a performer!

The project could have several benefits:

1. A fund raising opportunity for constituency groups as they gear up for the 2012 elections

2. Strengthening of the labor movement by integrating its components and educating its members

3. Fun and relaxation for all participants.

Other than the time and place, plans have not been made, but a conference call of activists and constituency group leaders is scheduled for 7 PM Wednesday, January 11. It takes the place of our regular monthly planning meeting.

We will decide how to approach the program and the fund-raising aspect. Anyone with an interest can contact us for information on the call.

Don't Forget the MLK Parade

On Monday, January 16, Jobs with Justice will join Gerardo Contreras and the Labor Council for Latin American Activities in the Fort Worth MLK parade. We will meet at the same place as last year, near the convention center, between 9 and 10 AM. The parade steps off at 11, but it goes pretty fast. Plan to stick around and have lunch together afterwards!

Since we began in 1990, Jobs with Justice has always helped advance labor, civil rights, church, and community strength!
