Johnson Speaks to Mighty Teamsters 745

Congresswoman Johnson referred to IBT 745 as "the largest union in America" at the beginning of her presentation on March 6. There were more than 700 unionists in the hall! She was welcomed by President Ken Bryant and Financial Secretary Brent Taylor. She emphasized the financial problems being created when the government spends Social Security tax money on other expenses. She particularly blamed the President's tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.

"The main thing we have to do is stop spending the Social Security dollars on something other than Social Security," said the Congresswoman.

She spoke briefly, then introduced Dr. Wildman of AARP. Wildman emphasized the present solvency and stability of Social Security funds. She said that no changes in benefits would occur until 2042 or 2052, and that the fund could continue to pay over 70% of benefits after that, even if nothing were done to change the system.

Teamsters lined up to sign petitions brought by the Alliance of Retired Americans.
