UFCW has particularly distinguised itself in its political action in Dallas County. Individual union members report signing up hundreds of new voters during election times. During a critical strike in California, Dallas' own Angela Johnson temporarily gave up her spot at a grocery store checkout counter and raised thousands of dollars for her union brothers and sisters. She was honored at the 2004 Labor Day breakfast as a "Heroine of Labor." Johnson also works with the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW), the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU), and the A Philip Randolph civil rights organization. She's looking for people to get involved in all of them!
